Last month, I hurt my back pretty badly at the gym while exercising. It was so bad that the next morning, I couldn’t get out of bed and I was reminded I am not unbreakable. As I lay in bed that morning, all of my fears about being paralyzed flooded my mind, and I had flashbacks to 30 years ago when I was in a wheelchair after my accident. The accident had also compressed seven discs in my lower back which caused me extreme pain initially.
Of course, I went to God in prayer because I was powerless and felt hopeless the morning after hurting my back again. It was comforting to know God was with me in my time of need once again because there was nothing else I could do. I remembered how I felt after my accident and what the doctors and therapists told me almost 30 years ago.
Despite their negative outlook, my faith was rekindled and the hope I had in the supreme Healer was stronger than my physical inabilities (Exodus 15:26, 1 Peter 2:24). God was still with me even after I spent six years living in sin away from Him and He healed me in ways better than doctors ever could. Now, I’ve got a story about how God heals.
Before I continue, I want to make sure everyone knows that you don’t have to have a brain injury or disability to need healing or help. The Bible is clear that every human being needs to be healed because we all are broken people with sinful hearts and corrupt flesh (Jeremiah 17:9, Romans 3:10, 23, 1 John 1:8).
Healing is defined as, “To make free from injury or disease; restore.” We are broken people living in a broken and fallen world that needs healing (Genesis 3:15; 6:5, James 4:1-2, Revelation 21:4).
The Bible is clear there is only one miracle-working healer, and it isn’t a preacher or a power-hungry politician (Proverbs 4:20-22, Isaiah 53:4-6, Acts 8:5-8, 1 Peter 2:24). We know there is a miracle-working power in the blood.
I experienced both spiritual and physical healing after my accident. I have seen God’s miraculous works in my life and the lives of others. God allowed me to be broken physically and spiritually so that only he could get the glory.
The doctors told my family there wasn’t much hope I’d ever walk again if I survived the surgeries I had to get due to my accident. I am here to say that God still works miracles and heals people if it’s His will.
We’ve all heard about the miracles God performed in the Bible through the early church and Jesus Himself. Miraculous healings are acts of God because God is the giver of all life (Matthew 10:1; 4:23, Luke 10:9, John 10:10, Romans 8:11).
He has rescued His people time and again. If we really want God to make America great and heal the land, we must first humble ourselves and turn from our evil ways (2 Chronicles 7:14).
God has radically healed dying people and even raised Jesus back to life (Acts 10:38; 19:11, Romans 6:4, 1 Corinthians 15:4). We don’t just see the miraculous accounts in the Bible, each of us has seen God work miracles in our lives and the lives of others.
God is still in the miracle-working business. No, He doesn’t always give us what we want and like a genie in a bottle, but He works things out His way and in His time. God’s ways are higher and better than ours (Isaiah 40:28; 55:8-9, Romans 11:33-34). Do we really want a God whom we can understand with our sinful and finite minds?
One of the hardest parts of being a Christian is not understanding why God does what He does, take courage my heart. He doesn’t always answer our prayers like we want and He doesn’t always heal the way we want Him to.
But that is why we each must grow in our faith and trust that God knows what is best for us now and in the future. We are all glad that God didn’t answer our prayers like we wanted Him to at some point in our lives, and we cherish that beautiful day.
I have lost loved ones that God didn’t heal and I know they will never suffer again in this life or the one to come. Many of my friends are praying for miracles to heal their loved ones now and I will continue to pray with them.
I also have friends who are grieving the loss of loved ones they never expected to lose. Just this week, I learned a paralyzed friend went home to heaven at the age of 44. Despite all of their pain and heartache, I know God is good, He is just, and He is able. I am so grateful that three weeks later, my lower back is once again restored to how it was before I heard it in the gym.
God is always in control and He knows what is best. Sometimes He gives us temporary healing in this life. Sometimes He gives us eternal healing that will last for eternity (Revelation 7:17; 21:4). We always have His Holy Spirit with us to comfort us in our hard times (John 14:26).
Wherever you are in your struggles in this life, I pray that you find peace and hope in God’s love. God is good and we can trust His healing hands.
